Just wanted to commend the authors for including the Zuul program in the "Objects First" book. With modern games focussing so much on fancy graphics and simulated gore, it's very nice to have an old-style text adventure that forces students to be more creative.
All my second semester students greatly enjoyed working on this project because each put a different spin on the adventure. Here are their projects:
Student #1 programmed our entire high school into the program. It generated a random schedule, so that the user had to visit each of the designated rooms in order.
Student #2 programmed a house in which there were rooms of no escape, e.g. a bathroom that, when you entered, suddenly had no way out unless you were carrying a certain object.
Student #3 programmed a game in which you had to collect treasures from around a house. It included crawling into a furnace and pulling a cord to get one of the treasures; pull the wrong cord or stay too long, and the furnace slammed shut with you inside.
Student #4 programmed a world in which you drove around and collected the 95 Theses, then nailed them all to the door of a church to win. It of course gave him extra pleasure to write this program, as he is a Lutheran attending a Catholic school!
Thanks, David and Michael!
