Well, whatever the problem was, it has now gone away....

I managed to replicate the problem on another machine directly after  
installing Java and BlueJ from scratch, but then after the first time  
I used it, everything returned to normal... and everything is normal  
now on my main machine.

Sorry about the false alarm..
