Hi Andrew,

Interesting question!

Using ACM's digital library (The Guide) I've found three references
from 1999 mentioning the term "objects first":

Tools and techniques for teaching objects first
     in a Java course
     Michael Kölling, John Rosenberg
     March 1999
ACM SIGCSE Bulletin, The proceedings of the thirtieth
SIGCSE technical symposium on Computer science education
     SIGCSE '99

Introduction of OO with Java, Objects First
     Joseph Bergin
     June 1999
Proceedings of the Workshop on Object-Oriented Technology
     Publisher: Springer-Verlag
Lecture Notes in Computer Science, Vol. 1743

     Objects First, Modeling Is Important
     Dorris Schmedding
     June 1999
Proceedings of the Workshop on Object-Oriented Technology
     Publisher: Springer-Verlag
Lecture Notes in Computer Science, Vol. 1743

Is far as ACM DL is concerned (oh, and my search abilities ;-),
Michael and John were the first to coin the term.

If you search for classes early, you'll find Owen Astrachan's
SIGCSE seminar from 1998:

Using classes early, an object-based approach to using C++
     in introductory courses

Cheers,
Michael
