educational advisory capacity, may be able to express to them the
outrage this is likely to cause in the educational community.

Also, you should find a good lawyer who's willing to work pro bono.
Since BlueJ isn't actually open source, it may be tougher to find
someone, but some law school professor is likely to be interested. My
guess is that you could charge them with fraud, abuse of process, and
ask to be compensated for the time required to challenge the patent
application since any reasonable patent search should have found your
dissertation.

Of course, maybe I'm being overly optimistic, but a threatening letter
from an Ivy League law professor has to get even Microsoft's legal
department's attention. Especially when it can quote one of their
managers admitting that they ripped off the idea.
