In debating whether a closed-source project (any such project out  
there) should be open-sourced or not, the arguments I hear most often  
are motivated by selfishness.

"Open-sourcing this project will benefit *me* because..."
"*I* will be able to make changes..."
"*My students* will be able to choose..."

These are not the right arguments. We should instead be stating how  
open-sourcing it will benefit the project team -- without using "I".

The BlueJ team has made a choice to retain control of the source  
code. To change that decision, you need to come up with clear,  
unselfish arguments that will convince *them.*
