Hi Davin,

Thanks, that's fixed it.

I had already installed Java 6 on both machines (Vista, XP) with a view to compatibility, but both versions  5 and 6 were on the XP machine, and although I thought I'd already pointed BlueJ at v6 on the XP, apparently it was pointing at v5.  Using the Select VM utility fixed that.   

Also, using the "rebuild package" from the tools menu seemed to work as well (I had not been using that option, only clicking on the class, or the Compile button, as you suspected).
